What Is a Five Vegetable Blend?
A five vegetable blend is exactly what it sounds like: five different vegetables combined into a single product.
In powder and capsule form, each vegetable is typically dried at low temperatures and milled into a fine powder before being blended together. The Five Vegetables Explained
Beetroot
Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) is a root vegetable in the Amaranthaceae family, closely related to chard and spinach. It is cultivated for its swollen taproot, which develops beneath the soil and is harvested when mature.
Beetroot is best known for its deep red-purple colour, which comes from a group of naturally occurring pigments called betalains. These include betacyanins (responsible for the red-purple colour) and betaxanthins (responsible for yellow-orange colour in other varieties). Betalains are water-soluble and are not found in many other plants.
Fresh beetroot naturally contains nitrates and nutrients including folate, manganese and potassium, along with dietary fibre.
Beetroot powder is made by drying and milling the whole beetroot root. It retains the colour and naturally occurring compounds of the fresh vegetable in a shelf-stable powdered form.
Broccoli
Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is a flowering vegetable in the Brassicaceae (cabbage) family. The part most commonly eaten — and used in powder form — is the immature flowering head, harvested before the flowers open.
Broccoli belongs to the broader family of cruciferous vegetables, which also includes cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts and cabbage.
Broccoli contains glucosinolates — a group of naturally occurring sulphur-containing compounds found throughout the Brassicaceae family. Fresh broccoli also naturally contains vitamin C, vitamin K and folate, along with dietary fibre.
Broccoli powder is made from dried whole broccoli florets and stems, retaining the plant's naturally occurring compounds in powdered form.
Carrot
The carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus) is a root vegetable in the Apiaceae family. Like beetroot, the edible part is the taproot, which develops underground as the plant matures.
Carrots are most commonly orange, though they are also cultivated in purple, yellow, red and white varieties. Their orange colour comes from carotenoids — a large group of naturally occurring pigments produced by plants. The most abundant carotenoid in orange carrots is beta-carotene, which the body can convert into vitamin A.
Fresh carrots naturally contain other carotenoids including alpha-carotene and lutein, as well as potassium, vitamin K and dietary fibre.
Carrot powder retains the naturally occurring carotenoids of the fresh vegetable and provides the whole dried root in powdered form.
Tomato
The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is technically a fruit — the ripened ovary of the flowering plant — but is generally treated as a vegetable in culinary and nutritional contexts. It belongs to the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, alongside capsicum, eggplant and potato.
Tomatoes are notable for their content of lycopene, a carotenoid responsible for their characteristic red colour. Lycopene is a fat-soluble carotenoid and is one of the most extensively studied naturally occurring compounds in tomatoes, though research into its specific effects is ongoing.
Fresh tomatoes also naturally contain vitamin C, potassium, folate and other carotenoids including beta-carotene.
Tomato powder is made from dried whole tomatoes and retains the naturally occurring pigments and compounds of the fresh fruit.
Spinach
Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is a leafy green vegetable in the Amaranthaceae family — the same family as beetroot and chard. Unlike beetroot, the edible part of the spinach plant is the leaf rather than the root.
Spinach naturally contains a broad range of nutrients and plant compounds, including folate, carotenoids and chlorophyll — the green pigment responsible for photosynthesis in plants.
Spinach also contains oxalates, naturally occurring compounds that bind to certain minerals including calcium and iron. This can reduce the absorption of those minerals from spinach, which is worth understanding when considering spinach as part of a varied diet.
Spinach powder is made from dried spinach leaves and provides a shelf-stable powdered form of the whole leaf.
Why Combine Different Vegetable Powders?
