What Is Matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis). Unlike regular green tea where the leaves are steeped and discarded, with matcha you consume the entire leaf in powdered form — meaning you receive a far more concentrated dose of its beneficial compounds.

Originating in China and refined into a ceremonial art form in Japan, matcha has been central to Japanese tea culture for over 800 years and is now one of the world's most celebrated superfoods.

How Is Matcha Made?

Matcha is produced from shade-grown tea plants. In the weeks before harvest, the plants are covered to block direct sunlight, which triggers a surge in chlorophyll production and the amino acid L-theanine. The leaves are then hand-picked, steamed, dried, and stone-ground into a fine, vibrant green powder.
