Traditional Herbal Preparations: Teas, Infusions, Decoctions & Powders

For thousands of years, people across cultures have prepared plants in specific ways to make them easier to consume and incorporate into daily life. The methods they developed — teas, infusions, decoctions, and powders — reflect both practical knowledge and cultural tradition.

This article explores those preparation methods: what they are, where they come from, and how they relate to the whole-food powders and capsules used today.

What Is a Tea or Infusion?

The terms tea and infusion are often used interchangeably, though they carry slightly different meanings.

Tea traditionally refers to a drink made from the Camellia sinensis plant — the source of green tea, black tea, white tea, and oolong. Over time, the word has been applied more broadly to any hot drink made by steeping plant material in water.

An infusion is the broader category: plant material — leaves, flowers, or soft stems — steeped in hot water for a period of time. Water-based preparations primarily extract compounds that are soluble or dispersible in water, while other constituents may be extracted less efficiently. The plant material is then removed, and the liquid is consumed.

Infusions are among the most widely documented forms of herbal preparation across cultures. Ginger, peppermint, and chamomile are among the plants with long histories of use as infusions in various traditions.

What Is a Decoction?

A decoction involves heating or gently simmering plant material in water for longer than a typical infusion. The exact preparation time varies considerably according to the botanical, tradition and intended preparation. Because harder plant parts — roots, bark, seeds, or woody stems — do not release their constituents as readily as leaves or flowers, longer exposure to heat and water is used.

Decoctions are documented across a wide range of traditional systems. Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a good example of a botanical traditionally suited to decoction. Its tough, woody fruiting body has commonly been simmered or boiled in water rather than prepared as a brief infusion. Ashwagandha is another plant with a documented history of decoction in Ayurvedic practice, where a preparation called kashaya — a decoction of herbs in water — is one of the classical forms described in traditional texts.

The distinction between infusion and decoction reflects a practical understanding of plant material: different parts of a plant require different approaches.

What Is a Powder?

Drying and grinding plant material into a powder is one of the oldest forms of preservation and preparation. Powders can be mixed into water, food, or other liquids, or pressed into tablets and capsules.

Unlike a water-based infusion, a whole-plant powder retains the plant material itself rather than only the components that move into the water during preparation. Its composition can still be influenced by drying, grinding, storage and other processing conditions.

Powdered preparations appear across many traditions. In Ayurvedic texts, churna refers to a powdered herbal preparation, often combined with honey, ghee, or warm water. In traditional Chinese medicine, powdered herbs were used alongside decoctions and other forms.

Powders offer practical advantages:

  • They are shelf-stable and portable
  • They can be measured precisely
  • Powders retain the whole ground plant material rather than selectively extracting water-soluble components

Turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon have long histories of use as dried powders across culinary and traditional contexts.

Why Preparation Method Matters

Different preparation methods extract or preserve different things. An infusion draws out water-soluble compounds. A decoction uses heat and time to access constituents in harder plant material. A powder retains the whole plant in dried form.

A decoction of reishi presents its constituents differently from consuming the dried mushroom material itself. Neither approach is simply better or worse — they reflect different practical and traditional contexts.

Traditional practitioners developed these methods through observation and accumulated knowledge — not through the kind of controlled research used today. The reasons they gave for preferring one method over another often reflected the frameworks of their own traditions rather than the mechanisms we would describe now.

This means that traditional preparation methods and modern understanding of plant constituents don't always map neatly onto each other. A preparation that was valued in one tradition for one reason may be understood differently — or not yet well understood — through a modern lens.

From Traditional Preparations to Modern Capsules

Capsules filled with whole-food powders are a relatively recent development, but they draw on the same underlying approach as traditional powdered preparations: preserving the whole plant material in a convenient, shelf-stable form.

The powder-in-capsule format retains the ground botanical material itself rather than selectively concentrating particular compounds through extraction. This fits our whole-food approach: where appropriate, we prefer to work with the botanical in a relatively simple powdered form rather than formulate around a single isolated constituent.

However, we would not claim that capsules are universally superior to other preparation methods. Different forms suit different contexts, and the traditions that developed infusions and decoctions did so for good practical reasons. The shift from preparing a decoction or infusion at home to taking a capsule reflects changes in how people live — not a departure from the tradition of using plants in daily life.

A Note on Evidence

The history of herbal preparations is documented unevenly. Some traditions left detailed written records; others were primarily oral. Archaeological evidence can confirm the presence of plant material but rarely tells us how it was prepared or why.

When we describe traditional preparation methods, we are drawing on ethnobotanical documentation, historical texts, and anthropological records — not on clinical evidence about outcomes. The existence of a traditional practice does not, by itself, tell us what that practice achieves by modern standards.
