Organic Black Pepper Capsules | The Spice Route
A Small Peppercorn. An Enormous Journey.
Deep in the humid tropics, a climbing vine winds its way upward through the vegetation.
Long green spikes hang beneath glossy leaves.
Along each spike grow clusters of small fruits.
They seem unremarkable.
Yet when harvested and dried, these tiny fruits become one of the most recognised spices on Earth.
Black Pepper.
For centuries, pepper travelled enormous distances through ports, markets and trading routes connecting distant parts of the world.
Ships carried it across oceans.
Merchants transported it through trading cities.
Fortunes were built around it.
And eventually, a spice that once crossed continents became something found on tables around the world.
The Spice Route celebrates that extraordinary journey.
Inside each capsule is Organic Black Pepper Powder, finely milled and encapsulated in its whole spice form.
The Vine Behind the Peppercorn
Black Pepper comes from Piper nigrum, a tropical climbing vine.
Unlike chilli peppers, Black Pepper doesn't grow as a familiar red pepper or chilli pod.
The plant produces hanging spikes carrying numerous small fruits.
As the fruits develop they change colour, eventually producing the peppercorns from which one of the world's great spices is made.
Black Pepper has particularly deep historical connections with southern India, where pepper cultivation became intertwined with some of the world's great trading networks.
But before there were merchants, ships and distant markets, there was simply a vine growing beneath the tropical canopy.
Every journey began with the plant.
From Vine to Peppercorn
Black Pepper begins green.
Clusters of developing fruits hang from the vine before being harvested and dried.
During drying, the outer surface darkens and contracts around the seed, creating the familiar wrinkled black peppercorn recognised around the world.
Those peppercorns can then be ground into the aromatic spice that has become a fixture of kitchens across countless cultures.
For The Spice Route, we take that familiar ingredient and present it in another simple form.
Whole Organic Black Pepper Powder, finely milled and encapsulated.
The Spice That Travelled the World
Long before modern transport connected continents, Black Pepper was already travelling extraordinary distances.
Pepper moved through the trading networks linking India with the Middle East, the Mediterranean and eventually Europe.
Merchants bought it.
Ships carried it.
Ports competed for it.
Trading cities prospered from it.
For long periods of history, pepper was far more than an everyday kitchen ingredient.
It was valuable cargo.
The search for spices including pepper became intertwined with voyages seeking new maritime routes between Europe and Asia.
A fruit growing on a tropical vine had become part of a story spanning oceans.
That remarkable history became the inspiration for The Spice Route.

Enter The Spice Route
The journey begins beneath a tropical canopy.
Pepper vines climb upward through humid green vegetation.
Workers move amongst the vines as hanging spikes are gathered.
From there, the landscape changes.
The pepper reaches trading settlements and busy coastal ports.
Wooden vessels wait beyond the harbour.
Cargo is loaded.
Sails rise.
The coastline slowly disappears.
Across the water are other ports, other merchants and other markets.
The pepper changes hands again and again.
Across seas.
Across borders.
Across generations.
Until eventually the tiny peppercorn reaches places thousands of kilometres from the vine where its journey began.
A small peppercorn. An enormous journey.
Welcome to The Spice Route.

When Pepper Was Precious Cargo
It is difficult to look at Black Pepper today and imagine just how valuable it once became.
Pepper crossed ancient trading networks between Asia and Europe and remained an important commodity for centuries.
It travelled aboard ships and through trading ports.
It passed through the hands of merchants.
It was bought, sold, stored and transported across enormous distances.
At different moments in history, pepper was valuable enough to be associated with wealth, tribute and trade on a scale difficult to imagine when looking at the pepper grinder sitting on a modern kitchen table.
The spice became ordinary.
Its history never was.
