Blue Lotus & Dream Herbs — What Does the Research Say?

There is a small but fascinating corner of botanical wellness that sits at the intersection of ancient ceremony, folk medicine, and modern sleep science. Dream herbs have been part of human culture for thousands of years. Blue Lotus, Calea zacatechichi, Mugwort, and Reishi each carry long histories of use across different cultures and continents. But what does the research actually say?

Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea)

Blue Lotus is perhaps the most historically significant of the dream botanicals. Used extensively in ancient Egyptian culture, Blue Lotus was associated with the sun god Ra and with states of elevated consciousness, relaxation, and spiritual vision. The primary active compounds are apomorphine and nuciferine. Apomorphine is a dopamine agonist that may explain the mild euphoric and relaxing effects traditionally associated with the plant. Nuciferine interacts with serotonin and dopamine receptors, creating a gentle calming effect distinct from sedation.

Calea zacatechichi (Dream Herb)

Calea zacatechichi is native to Mexico and Central America, used for centuries by the Chontal people of Oaxaca as a sacred dream-enhancing herb. A clinical study published in Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior found that Calea increased dream recall and the frequency of hypnagogic imagery compared to placebo. Participants reported more frequent and more memorable dreams after consuming the herb.

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

Mugwort has one of the longest and most geographically diverse histories of any dream herb, used in European folk medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Indigenous North American traditions. Its primary active compound thujone interacts with GABA receptors in the brain, which may explain its calming and dream-enhancing properties.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)

Known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Ling Zhi, Reishi has been used for over 2,000 years as a tonic for longevity, calm, and spiritual clarity. A 2012 study found that Reishi extract increased total sleep time and non-REM sleep. As an adaptogen, Reishi reduces the physiological stress response, creating conditions more conducive to deep, uninterrupted sleep and more vivid dreaming.
