What Is Cayenne Pepper? Benefits, Uses & Why We Use It in Our Capsules

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum) is a hot chilli pepper with a long history as both a food and traditional botanical. Native to the Americas, chilli peppers were cultivated for thousands of years before spreading through Europe, Africa and Asia following the Columbian exchange.

Today, cayenne is used throughout the world as a culinary spice and has attracted considerable research interest because of its naturally occurring capsaicinoids — particularly capsaicin, the compound primarily responsible for its characteristic heat.

What Is Cayenne Pepper?

Cayenne is a variety of Capsicum annuum, the same broad species that includes many other chilli peppers and sweet peppers.

The familiar cayenne powder is produced by drying mature red cayenne peppers and grinding them into a fine powder. Depending on the variety and growing conditions, cayenne peppers can vary considerably in pungency.

That heat is commonly measured using Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Different cayenne powders can therefore provide noticeably different levels of heat even though they come from the same species.

Capsaicin: Cayenne's Best-Known Compound

The characteristic heat of cayenne comes primarily from capsaicin, one of several naturally occurring compounds collectively known as capsaicinoids.

Capsaicin interacts with the body's TRPV1 receptors — receptors involved in detecting heat and other sensory stimuli. This interaction produces the familiar warming or burning sensation associated with chilli peppers.

Capsaicin has become the focus of a substantial body of modern research examining areas including thermogenesis, sensory signalling, metabolism and cardiovascular physiology.

The presence of research does not mean that every cayenne product will produce the same effect. Capsaicin concentration varies considerably between peppers and preparations, which is one reason the heat level and format of a cayenne product matter.

Cayenne in Traditional Use

Chilli peppers have an exceptionally long history in the Americas. Archaeological evidence indicates that Capsicum species were being used and cultivated thousands of years before European contact.

Following their introduction to Europe in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, chilli peppers spread rapidly through global trade routes and became incorporated into cuisines and traditional practices throughout Africa and Asia.

Cayenne subsequently appeared in European and North American herbal traditions as a warming botanical.

These traditional uses form an interesting part of cayenne's history, but they should be distinguished from modern clinical evidence.

Key Areas of Modern Research

Thermogenesis & Metabolism

Capsaicin has been studied for its relationship with thermogenesis — the body's production of heat — and energy expenditure.

Research in this area is one reason cayenne frequently appears in discussions of metabolism and active-lifestyle nutrition.

Circulation & Cardiovascular Research

Capsaicin has also been investigated for its interactions with mechanisms involved in blood-vessel function and cardiovascular physiology.

Cayenne is only one botanical studied in this area. Beetroot, hawthorn and garlic have very different compositions and research histories.

Digestive Research

Despite its intense sensory heat, capsaicin has also been investigated in relation to gastrointestinal physiology.

Tolerance varies considerably between individuals, however, and people who are sensitive to chilli may find cayenne uncomfortable — particularly at higher strengths.

Antioxidants & Plant Compounds

Cayenne contains naturally occurring carotenoids, phenolic compounds and other plant constituents alongside its capsaicinoids.

As with most whole-food botanicals, their concentrations vary according to the pepper variety, growing conditions and processing method.

Cayenne Powder vs Extract

This distinction is particularly important with cayenne.

Whole cayenne powder is simply dried and ground chilli pepper. It retains the broader composition of the original pepper.

Cayenne extracts concentrate particular components and can therefore be substantially more potent by weight than ordinary cayenne powder.

A 500 mg cayenne extract and 500 mg of whole cayenne powder should not automatically be considered equivalent.

Most of our cayenne range is based around whole-food cayenne powder, while specialised products such as Red Heat use concentrated cayenne extract.

Why Put Cayenne in Capsules?

Cayenne powder can easily be incorporated into food, but capsules provide a different format for people who want a measured amount without its intense flavour.

Capsules offer:

  • A consistent amount per capsule
  • No chilli heat in the mouth
  • Convenient storage and daily use
  • Different strengths and heat levels to suit individual tolerance

They don't make cayenne inherently better than using it as a food — they're simply a convenient alternative.

Understanding Cayenne Strength

One of the most important things to understand when choosing cayenne is that milligrams and heat level are not the same measurement.

Milligrams tell you how much cayenne powder is present.

Scoville Heat Units tell you how pungent that cayenne is.

That means two 500 mg cayenne capsules can potentially feel very different if they contain cayenne powders with different SHU ratings.

This distinction is why our range includes different strengths and heat levels rather than treating all cayenne products as interchangeable.
